Wood, cloth, cowrie shells, metal bells/rings, raffia. A striking Maou specimen found in a village north of Glanle in Western Cote DIvoire by me several years ago. Good evidence of tribal use and age with smooth and encrusted patina.
It is well-used in dance ceremonies (witnessed) and is in excellent condition for its age and tribal use. Gallery certificate of authenticity and provenance supplied with this mask. The Dan people are a large ethnic group inhabiting Liberia and Côte dIvoire.
In the northwest region of Côte dIvoire is the Dan Maou, a subgroup of the Dan. The Maou are largely governed by a variety of secret societies that use masquerade to enforce social norms and punish witchcraft and sorcery. Society uses this anthropomorphic bird-beaked mask to detect and punish sorcery. The Dan Maou people live in the northwestern part of the Dan region.Their masks are distinguished by a long beak-like form at the chin or mouth. Masks like these were feared by the general population as they served a judiciary function in denouncing spell-casters. (traditional tribal dances with masks) continue to take place in Cote D'Ivoires rural areas. These'Conductor' masks are worn by the Chief dancer who guides the other dancers. Dan Tribe and sub-Tribes, Guere and Yacouba, live in Cote D'ivoire and Liberia. They are referred to as the rainforest people. Dan masquerades are usually performed by male associations for rituals, education, social control and entertainment. Masks are thought to embody the most powerful of spirit forces called.
These bush spirits and masquerades bring control and order to village life. Much of the profit raised from this sale will go towards helping some impoverished children and villagers in Cote d'Ivoire, Liberia and Ghana.
We support two orphanages, as well as several villages in West Africa to whom we supply seeds, food and clean water solutions. We also run projects which include provision of anti-Malaria medicines and nets. We have recently aided in building two schools in remote villages, along with wells and sanitation facilities. Please see photographs towards the end of our listings of some of our recent aid efforts. Normally, PARCELFORCE or DHL are used for International Deliveries.
