Additional Information: A wooden African Mask with an elongated and slim face characterized by a long nose, a protruding mouth and two domed pierced eyes.This forehead, eyebrows, and cheeks are embellished with decorations made out of sheets of copper alloy. The copper alloy works show a Marka influence on the art of the Bamana. Such African Mask were found among the Bamana and the Marka peoples. This is a Kore society African Mask. Used by adult males during the initiation of young men into adult status. All Bamana males advance through various levels of initiation and secret knowledge and the Kore African Mask appears for only the most senior of men representing their personal struggle to achieve knowledge.
